Walking Day 3 - from the shire border between "Balonne" & "Maranoa"

Michael  & Robyn Brumpton gave us both a bed for 3 or 4 nights, fed us sumptuously, and told us some of the stories that go with people like them that come from living around here for most of their lives. At 8am Michael dropped Ethan & me out to the Shire border (where he had picked us up from on Saturday evening), with my trolley, to continue our walk towards Surat…

Below is the view looking back to St. George- the Welcome to Balonne Shire notice on the left, Michael’s ute disappearing into the distance around the middle of the picture, & Ethan still hanging in there on the right, and the back of my trolley in the right foreground:

Then we decided to walk apart for a while, Ethan went first coz he’s faster. Within quarter of an hour we had a sign appear on our left as to how far we now had to go to get to Surat..

Ethan quickly became a dot on the horizon. With some reception, we might be able to ring or text each other if necessary?

Another sign that the people of this region were welcoming us here. How lovely.

Then a sign on our right that not everyone before us had made it down this road. We stayed here for a bit considering Williki Collins:

Then a small sign of beauty in sight and sound, still surrounding us:

Ethan went ahead again at the end of the day to scout out a rest stop..

Just in time, as the sun was setting I got to the sign saying 500m,

travelling about 1.2 km an hour, I got the as the sun set:

and we started setting up camp...

A day of rest brings out what's best - & worst...

Hmm, well they say that rest can make us blessed.

Today I found a way to be a curse.

My God, I don’t want that, I want the best.

I think I found a way that might be worse..

At least the rest, and time with friends, both old

& new, an’ you (a friend who is the both -

like loving parents are to child that’s bold

let child be stretched so growing edges show.

This seems to make for losses, ’swell as wins,

but in that context, losses help us see

the contour of our selves (and our own sins)

or places where we fall short of glory.

And once again the context is the key;

Your loving care, your knowledge of me true,

you’re still committed, though d-head I be,

to grow this foetus up, inside of you.

So that’s where I will stay. Implanted here

within my wat’ry world that is your own,

where tears & pains quite often just appear

-  & mostly borne by you. You often moan,

are deeply hurt, quite person’ly “put out”

but bear the pains & discomforts yourself

until the earth itself will groan and shout

and all your kids be born, and in good health!

And where you take your dream then, in its strength,

I’m really looking forward to that time

when I will be grown to a child at length.

Just now my groan is “Let me with you rhyme!*”

*  Two other textual variations exist for this ending prayer: “Open up my mind!” and “Make your habits mine!”

This day allowed me to keep growing in that simple,  pithy, proverbial, needful way... to be a human who is:

"quick to listen,

slow to speak,

slow to anger"

[from that first century book probably written by Jesus Christ's little brother - James - as he recalled his big brother & the way he moved & related in the world. (James 1:19-20)]

Today I flunked the "slow to speak" bit when I got onto a topic that really interested me. Rats. Afterwards, I wanted to just forget about it and do something to feel better about myself. Luckily creative love cut me off at the pass, and helped me process it a little towards bringing real longer-term change.

Step One (of how many? I'll see by walking there). But walk I will, in company like this.

Second day on the trail from St. George..

Saturday morning. Michael & Robyn have a dig day ahead. Mich cooks us up some ham & eggs, and get us out to the exact spot we stopped at yesterday, by (or before)  about 8:30 am.  Feet very sore, my blisters, form nicely during the second day.

We realise again that it really is a pilgrimage through the world owned by creative love. We start the day with our walk-alone time. I send Ethan ahead, he is faster. It drizzled most of the morning and when we stop for our first beak 2 or three hours later we’ve both got our plastic ponchos on. There is a little break in the spitting rain, and I lie with my legs up a hill to drain their swelling and to hopefully minimize  their blisters.  We have yesterday chosen a psalm to learn to meditate on. First job (that we did yesterday) was to

  • read it in 5-7 English translations

  • Then choose one to memorise

  • Then learn it, say it together, responsivly, on our own. I made it into a song/ ditty.

  • We want to finish memorising it today, but only get ⅔ if the way, by the end of the day.

  • Later that night, before the next morning, I start a creative reflection on it, or the first concept addressed - who it is addressing. Images of Partnership. That was fun.

We stop 3 more times. I with my legs up to drain them. Then get going (more painfully) again. And then Michael picks us up at 5:30 pm

we just get to the edge of the Ballone Shire.

Then it was back into town,

  • quick talk on the phone  to Michael’s brother whom it turns out that I had an acquaintance with before (and when) they got married ~30 years ago

  • Collect my trolley from Michael’s shed, on his ute

  • Home to Michael & Robyn’s place, hot showers, a lovely dinner just the four of us around a little fire, out the back, finger food, pizza, steak, chicken wings, billy tea.

  • I let the pressure off some blisters using a needle coming under the skin from the side.

  • Ethan & I look through the trolley.

  • Some telly for some, and I go to bed to put my legs up some more.

It’s been a precious day. Still learning how to actively listen to Creative Love & to people, to give it a chance to grow in us.

First Day walking...

Michael & Ethan picked me up from the bus, and Michael drive us out to where I stopped last time.

We walked, stopping 2ce for a drink & a bite to eat.

We talked about the things that motivate us, and what changes we'd like to see in our characters, and ways forward for that. We spent two stints of about 40 min walking apart & separate, to allow each person to think a bit independently & consider creative loves' hopes and wishes.

Friday 5:25pm...Glen Andscomb stopped to check how we were.

Originally from Diranbandy, now staying at Surat, Glen saw us walking out of St. George this morning, but seeing us again tonight thought he’d stop and find out why we’re walking. I said there were ~30 reasons, last time I counted. (See the poem on the right of this blog: Mista Walker.) Thanks Glen, for your friendly interest. The world is more homely because of it.

Then Michael picked us up within 10 minutes. He said that today we made 32.1- 6.7=25.4 km today.

Yippee.

Learnings: List A - Attitude

I’m learning to be, as those proverbs say,

and as Yeshua’s little brother saw

within the life of his big bro. each day:

a movement style, a manner that is more

or less a change in movement, thus it shows

a kind of stance, or attitude of heart;

it goes against my culture, which just “knows”

a better way, or better ways to start

in these same habits of the mind, and will,

and then of body too, and soul-ish stuff,

for what I pick up from my culture’s sill -

what's left to cool, to take in as enough..

is just about the opposite, I've found

(but that will be affected by such things

as type of personality, that’s bound

to influence what I allow to cling

so tightly to my life, that I become,

and then are known by what grows in my life:

(“the carrot patch” or “pea place” or else some

such designation given not for strife-

sake, but just speaking truth, for clarity,

for understanding, making names that fit).

My habits go the other way, I see:

what he was quick to do; I’m slow at it!

What he took time to come to, just because

there’s much to be considered first, before

I speak a word that either backs what was

considered, or I change things even more.

Notes

Do not answer before you listen, and do not interrupt when another is speaking. (‭Sirach 11:8 NRSVUE‬)

‭

Now listen to me. I will give you counsel, and God be with you! You should represent the people before God and bring their cases to God. (Exodus 18:19 NRSVUE‬)

If one gives answer before hearing, it is folly and shame. (‭Proverbs 18:13 NRSVUE‬)

But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. (‭Luke 22:60 NRSVUE‬)

Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will set up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” [5] While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” (‭Matthew 17:4-5 NRSVUE‬)

Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him. [39] She had a sister named Mary, who sat at Jesus’s feet and listened to what he was saying. [40] But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her, then, to help me.” [41] But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things, [42] but few things are needed—indeed only one. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.” (‭Luke 10:38-42 NRSVUE‬)

You must understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger, [20] for human anger does not produce God’s righteousness. [21] Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. [22]  But be doers of the word and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. [23] For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; [24] for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. [25] But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing. [26]  If any think they are religious and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. [27] Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world. (‭James 1:19-27 NRSVUE‬)

Neighbour in bus to Walgett

Well Levi came to Walgett from up North

in PNG where he was born and lived

until he (month and week ago) went forth

to try Australia out, and see what seived -

what kind of things would not pass through the mesh

and what would pass through easily enough.

He drives big fuel trucks out to farms that spesh-

’ly want it and I think sometimes it’s tough.

But he is sharing life in rental place

with other blokes, and each one has a room,

but shares the lu & lounge & kitchen space.

Their boss is thoughtful, they don’t feel no doom.

to be continued (t.b.c.) - if we get together again..

Split, splot, splat..

Split:

I am about to split. Today the train is booked to Dubbo, then bus to Lightning Ridge, where I'm staying in town overnight, then bus to St. George in the morning... Meet my new walking partner Ethan and off we go North again.

Some family, friends, and neighbours sent me off at breaky:

And another neighbour joined me for a coffee as he dropped me off at the station:

Splot:

See some thoughts from this morning here, on the kind of Dad-Joke humour that creative love has been shunting my way and helping me to  appreciate.

Splat:

They say it will start raining up there tomorrow... See how we go in the rain. Reminds me of that children's song: "...Jumping in the puddles with a slit, split, splat".

The people who have stored my trolley in their shed, said my new walking buddy could stay with them too, & reminded me that they were willing to drop me out to where I got before, then pick me up at the end of the day, and give me a bed for the night, then do that for a day or two. How good to walk without the trolley, and worry of setting up and packing up camp for the night. Thank you to Michael & Robyn of the Bush Disciples Church in St. George. I hope we can have Sunday off to hang out with them this weekend. We'll see how things go.
