Sat 17 May, 2,025 yrs (roughly) since the start of the C.E.
From 5.5 km before Laura Pub/ Van park, to where-ever I get to North of Laura … (hopefully 29km)...
We started on the road @ 6:15 am & made it back to breaky by 7:30am (popping into Harold’s store to get a 5 m extension for the camp site -to save us moving the camper). Then back to the track about 8:45am.. & got to a sign for days to come…
North Laura River crossing:
….
Amazing to have termite mounds, but then also, to have the same mud caking the outside of living trees…. In one area, up to three quarters of the way up the tree…
Dave and I walked and talked, and walked in silence, he needs space to think (else his brain switches off), & I need to give people around me space to think, so goodness seems to be growing as we take each other into account. I’m not sure how he sees things…. It’s been good sharing some walking with him.
We saw some lovely little rivers (often just called creeks).. went down to one where it was shallow, and put our feet in, but kept an eye out for movement in the deeper parts 30 m away..
That night we asked about who was “Stumpy” in “Stumpy’s Parmy” on the menu (which turned out to be lovely), and Stewie pointed to a picture at the top of the wall behind him, and said “He was here for 20 yrs, he owned this pub. He was my best mate. A croc got him, while he was fishing (off the bank deep water, good fishing), @ Kerrigans Run (I think he said, from memory)… so even “locals” can get a bit too bold…
I had to stop, with stinging ankles, just after this sign. We thought “if this Motel, which looked to be just down the road) can sell us a drink (hot or cold, but preferably cold), we’ll just stay put here. They couldn’t, so we stayed for two hours, during which time my old dad caught me on the phone… we had reception!
He had just got a text through to us alerting us to a bacterium maloides, or something like that, which is ubiquitous up in Northern Australia, and had killed 31 people in Qld, so far, this year. We didn’t go into 2 dams after that.
We both got quite sore feet that got inflamed and rashy. Like a heat rash. And we think Dave might have got a bit heat stroked. Glad to have tomorrow off walking. We stayed for about 2 hrs, ( I with my feet up) at a little community toilet with tank water (& heaps of mozzies - so Dave’s fly net over hit hat was good and we plastered the rid on), the left to get 1 hr of ambling untill Ethan collected us…
Ethan picked us up just after 7pm right here (below, about 4 km past the “motel” at the property on the right, we left our walking sticks there too).
A lovely “Stumpy’s Parmy” each, and a cold drink for dinner, shower and bed… washing in the morning…
